Continue reading for answers to some of the most frequently asked liposuction questions.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove stubborn areas of fat and reshape the body.

While some lipo cases are performed under general anesthesia, a majority rely on tumescent anesthesia which infuses a mixture of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine.

During laser-assisted liposuction, the surgeon makes small incisions in the skin in order to insert a laser fiber and melt fat. Then, a thin tube called a cannula suctions out the liquefied fat.

Power-assisted liposuction does not involve lasering fat. Rather, it uses a rapidly-vibrating cannula to break up fat and extract it from the body.

Is Liposuction Safe?

In the hands of a skilled and experienced provider, liposuction is a safe and effective procedure.

However, it is not 100% risk-free, and patients should be fully aware of possible side effects and complication prior to treatment.

How Long is Lipo Recovery?

Following liposuction, patients will need several days to rest and recover. They may experience mild swelling, bruising, and pain.

Any discomfort can be readily managed with prescription or over-the-counter pain relievers.

When Can I Return to Work and Normal Activities?

Within a week, most women and men are able to return to work and resume normal activities. However, they should avoid strenuous exercise for 1 month or until otherwise instructed by their surgeon.
